At Bensman Family Farms we raise cattle and hogs the way our grandparents would have. You won’t find any growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics in the meat we sell. Ever.

We raise a limited number of beef cattle and heritage pork for sale to people who are concerned about what they feed themselves and their families. Animals are processed locally to your specifications.

We provide Dorothy Lane Market with animals for their Grass Fed Beef program. If you purchase grass fed beef at DLM, you might already be enjoying some of our product. Buying grass fed beef from Dorothy Lane Market will let you know if you would like to become a grass fed beef consumer.

The grass fed beef is seasonal as we do not harvest the animals in the winter months when they are on hay. Being a small farm, we do not always have animals available, but the wait is never long and we would love to put you on our preferred list. Currently we are out of grass fed beef, but we will have some available in late spring 2012.

What We Do

We purchase small calves and pigs from farmers who care for their animals the same way we do. All of our animals and feed come from other small, local farmers. We like to support our fellow farmers, knowing we are starting out with a quality product and we just need to keep it that way!

 The breed of pork we raise is Berkshire. You won’t find them in a large scale commercial farming operation as they don’t grow quite as fast, stay quite as lean or reproduce quite as prolifically. With commercial farming, profit per animal is emphasized over quality of product. Berkshire meat, known to be well marbled and flavorful, is served at the finest restaurants. Berkshire is a heritage breed, which means their population is down significantly from its peak.

Our beef breeds include Angus and Hereford, or for those who like larger animals an occasional cross with some Charolais or Simmental.

All animals are raised naturally, in a low stress environment. For us, that means:

• Animals are allowed to nurse from their mothers
• Weather permitting, cattle graze on pasture
• Cattle are on pasture when it is warm and fed hay when it is not. The only other nutrition they receive are minerals and vitamins.
• Pasture ground is not treated with herbicides or pesticides.
• Hogs are kept on natural bedding rather than bare raised grates
• The aforementioned restrictions on ‘performance enhancing drugs’
• Animals diets do not include any types of animal byproducts
• Animals are treated humanely – no prods, whips or shocking devices
• Pens are low density, allowing animals to move and exercise.
• Animals are only ‘put down’ when there is no other option, not just because they slow down the production process.
